Combined Thesis

Combined thesis with two (2) Masters (different CROHO codes)

Education and Examination Regulations (MSc-EER: article 18)

In the Master’s exam, a maximum of 13 ECTS credits of exemptions may be granted. No exemption can be granted for the Master’s thesis.

Exception:

If a student combines two different Master’s programmes (with different CROHO codes) he/she may be allowed to write one extended thesis of 21 credits. In that case the mandatory thesis requirements are fulfilled with the successful completion of the extended thesis within both Master’s programmes and the above mentioned exemption of maximum 13 credits applies to at most one of the two Master’s programmes. The student should ask for approval from the Board of Examiners after consulting his/her thesis supervisor.

A student can fulfil all requirements for two (2) Master’s programmes if the student:

  1. Is registered for both Master’s programmes;
  2. Completes all exam requirements of both Master’s programmes;
  3. Writes two (2) theses or writes a combined and extended Master’s thesis upon approval of the thesis supervisors and the Board of Examiners before the start of the Master’s thesis.

Combined thesis within one (1) Master (2 tracks)

Some Master’s students aim to graduate in two tracks. This is possible but it is a widespread misunderstanding that if students finish the second track they will be awarded a second Master’s Degree. The student is not doing a second master but a second track within one Master’s programme. Legally the School of Business and Economics (SBE) is not allowed to give two official certificates for one Master. Therefore students will receive one official final grade transcript of the first track of choice, which belongs to the Degree, and one transcript for the second track.

A student can fulfil all requirements for two tracks if the student:

  1. Is registered for both tracks (via Studielink);
  2. Passes all obligatory courses of both tracks, and all other exam requirements;
  3. Passes all exam requirements of the first track of choice (60 ECTS);
  4. Writes a combined Master’s thesis (consists within most programmes of 17 ECTS credits) that covers topics (and requirements) in both tracks and for which approval has been obtained prior to the start of the writing process.

Due to the fact that the subject of the Master’s thesis needs to cover both tracks it is possible that the Master thesis supervisor is of the opinion that a more extended thesis is requested (which will remain 17 ECTS credits).

The student has to request graduation in two tracks at the beginning of his/her Master thesis process by a signed letter to the Board of Examiners. The letter has to be accompanied with an attached letter by the supervisors supporting this request. In particular the first supervisor needs to nominate a second supervisor from the other track, whose name will be stated in the letter.

When dealing with the graduation request the exam administration (Exam’s Office) will check if passed educational units are part of both tracks and if the requirements for both tracks are met.

Students should be aware of automatic graduation. In case a student finishes one track before the other one he/she will graduate automatically and will not be able to finish a second track within the Master.

Please note: this regulation is applicable for one-year Master’s programmes for which you have to register for a track via Studielink. It is not applicable to Research Master’s programmes.
