Student Council

 The SBE Student Council represents the SBE student body and is determined to maintain and improve the quality of education at SBE. A selected group of students works in conjunction with the academic staff of the SBE to tackle education-enhancing projects and solve potential educational problems in the entire curriculum, with the student’s best interest in mind.

The Student Council consists of student members of the Programme Committee, the Faculty Council, and the Faculty Board. During the Student Council meetings, the members keep each other informed about the developments in the school, discuss matters concerning students’ interest, exchange information and experiences, and suggest improvements in school policies – based on the insight of all involved governance bodies.

The Student Council has been initiated to form an overlapping platform that has the knowledge and creativity of several entities that are frequently challenged on all SBE wide levels. The Student Council, just like the Programme Committee and Faculty Council, meet once a month.

The responsibilities of the Student Council revolve around maintaining and improving the quality of SBE. This is achieved by actively overseeing and advising on all governances, and by functioning as a body that can be used to propel initiatives and innovative contributions for a better student experience in terms of education, facilities, and community. If students have an idea or have worked out a proposal on how to improve the SBE they are encouraged to help or inform us about it!

In order to be effective on a SBE wide level, the Student Council is divided into four task forces, namely:

  • Quality of Education
  • Visibility & Branding

What is still in progress?

The scope of ongoing projects is both very broad and dynamic. Every taskforce acts according to its pre-specified semester plan and facilitates in problem-solving process of any taskforce specific problems.

SBE Management Structure

This is the organigram of SBE. In the center there is the (SBE) Faculty Board where the governance decisions are made. The Faculty Board gets advice from the International Advisory Board and the (SBE) Faculty Council. Both advisory bodies are there to give an extra perspective to the Faculty Board and help improve SBE. Besides an advisory role, the Faculty Council also makes proposals and approves proposed changes in Faculty Regulations and Examination Rules.

The Bachelor Master Management Team (BMMT) regulates and controls the quality of the courses and programs. They do this in cooperation with the Board of Examiners, and get valuable input from the Programme Committee (PC) and First Year Student Panel (FYSP). Both PC (2nd, 3rd year BSc and MSc) and FYSP (1st year BSc) consist out of students and staff that critically reflect on the courses and programs taught at SBE. With this input the BMMT creates recommendations towards the different departments.

The Student Council consists out of the student members of the Faculty Council, Programme Committee, and Faculty Board. This student body, chaired by the Student Representative, aims to further improve education and the student experience on a SBE wide level.

The Board of Examiners (BoE) is responsible for safeguarding the quality of exams and admission criteria and preparing advice to the SBE Board. The Test Committee is related to the BoE. It is concerned with the quality of assessments and the quality of testing procedures and is responsible for safeguarding the quality of exams and admission criteria, preparing advice to the SBE Board.

Programme Committee

The programme Committee is responsible for safeguarding the quality of all existing and new educational activities in BA and MA, here and abroad. This entails programmes, courses, trainings, theses and tutors.

The tasks of the Programme Committee comprise the following areas:

  • To advise on the determination and alteration of the Examination rules
  • To evaluate the quality of the education programs and individual courses
  • To advise the program directors, Board of Examiners (BoE), and Bachelor and Master Management Team (BMMT) on every matter concerning the education in the specific study program
  • The programme committee deals with organizational wide issues and handles cases on a collective level

First Year Student Panel

As first year students have traditionally not been represented in the Faculty Council, the Student Council or the Program Committee, the chairman of the latter, Prof. Dr. Joan Muysken, decided to set up a First Year Student Panel to also give first year students a voice. In the Student Panel, first year students from different programs get together once every block to discuss the quality of courses, overall programs, and other matters of concern. Joan Muysken, Jeannette Hommes (First Year Bachelor Coordinator and member of the Program Committee) and the chair of the student council and Program Committee are also present. As our school constantly strives for improvement, students’ feedback on our programs is extremely important to us. The best way to receive this is to get together every once in a while to give you the chance to talk about things and give us the chance to react quickly to anything that may require improvement.

Faculty Council

The faculty council is also named SBE council. This council consists of the chairman, three employees, of which one employee represents the science department and a minimum of one employee of a supporting department, and five students of the SBE. The faculty council meets once in six weeks to discuss various topics regarding SBE matters.                  

The tasks of the SBE Council comprise of the following matters:

  • Discuss the general matters with the SBE board
  • Make proposals on relevant matters concerning the faculty
  • Approve the Faculty Regulations and Examination rules
  • Advise on the appointment of new professors
  • Advise on the faculty budget

The SBE Board administers several tasks:

  • General management of the faculty
  • Responsible for education, research, strategy, and internationalization
  • Draw up faculty regulations (with the approval of the Faculty Council and the University Executive Board)
  • Draw up and control examination rules
  • Internal quality maintenance
  • Appointment of the program directors
  • Draw up the statutes, house rules, and yearly budget

Library Committee                        

Library services for each faculty are discussed in faculty library committees, which comprise of a representative of the library (the Faculty librarian), faculty members and students. The extent and the content of services provided are a matter of contracts between the library and the faculties. The electronic and print collections in the library and Learning and Resource Centers are developed on the basis of Faculty requirements; the library committee is responsible for the selection of most literature for research and education purposes.

Electronic databases, electronic documents and journals, and links to important Internet sites are supplied by Maastricht University and, if licenses permit, campus-wide and at home. Maastricht University co-operates at a national level with other university libraries and the Royal Dutch Library. These libraries play an important role in the provision of interlibrary loan services, and in the joint acquisition of digital information resources. At a regional level the UL cooperates with other libraries in the higher education field to the benefit of the students.
