Registration for education – Registration procedure

You should register online for all parts of your programme (fixed and non-fixed, obligatory or non-obligatory). You can register for a maximum of two courses per course period and one skills training per skills period.

If you are a first-year Bachelor‘s student, you are automatically registered for all courses in your first year. As of year 2 you have to register yourself for your courses.

If you are a Master‘s student, you only will automatically be registered for the compulsory courses in the first course period of your programme. Timetables of new students may therefore not be published before the SBE introduction days. As of the second period, you have to register yourself for your courses.

Note! If you want to follow specific courses for the second time, you must always register for these courses, including those in period 1. Registration implies you attend all tutorials. Depending on the course – if you have already passed your tutorial participation – it might be possible to register for the exam only and not for the complete course. Please check the course manual for more information.

If your Master‘s programme includes an elective in the first period of the programme, you can inform the Education Office (EEO) about your choice via www.surfyourself.nl

In case you experience technical problems when trying to register for course, you should report this immediately via SurfYourSelf so EEO can check what’s wrong. You should always do this before the deadline for registration.

Registration for education – Scheduling, Timetables, and Evening Education

Educational activities for Bachelor students take place from Monday to Thursday from 8.30 hrs to 21.00 hrs and on Fridays from 8.30 till 18.00 hrs. For Master students, educational activities take place from Monday to Friday from 8.30 till 21.00. However, it is possible to indicate that you are not available for education after 18.00 via the online Availability tool during the registration period. If you indicate that you are not available for evening education, you will never be scheduled after 18.00.

Timetables are published approximately two weeks before the start of education of the period involved. Changing tutorial groups is not allowed unless a double study programme interferes with your classes at SBE. Requests for rescheduling because of two studies or a language course at the Language Center, can be submitted via this form. The request form, including the evidence required, can be handed in directly at the SBE Information Desk, until one week before the start of the course period. It is, however, possible that the exam for two studies – or graduate options- are held at the same time. In such case no special arrangements will be made.

Registration for education – Missed deadlines

If you fail to register before the deadline you cannot participate in the course. If you didn’t register for a course or exam before the deadline, there is 1 possibility to use a so-called “waiver *. You can request a waiver at the Information Desk at the main building at the Tongersestraat 53 near the entrance (please find the opening hours at SBE Student Info via the Launchpad in the Student Portal

*with a waiver you are granted a late registration for courses or exams – under conditions.

 Conditions concerning a ‘waiver for late registration’:

  • Can be used for 1 study phase only (Bachelor or Master)
  • Can be used for either course or exam registrations
  • Can only be used once
  • There need to be a place available in the required course(s)
  • Can be handed in till the last Friday before the educational period at 12:00h (noon), if it concerns registration for a course;

In case it concerns registration for an exam: it can be handed till the last Friday before the exam period at 12:00h (noon)

  • Need to be requested personally at the information desk of SBE
  • Can be used for 1 deadline only (max. 2 courses or 1 skill or all resit exams during this period)
  • Cannot be transferred to another person

Missing a deadline is very serious and can lead to study delay and/or a negative binding study advice. Study delay can have a negative effect on study financing and can increase tuition costs. If you missed the deadline for the waiver (last Friday before the educational/exam period at 12:00h (noon)) as well, please find more information here.

Registration for education – Cancellation of registration

During the registration period, it is also possible to cancel your registration.

Note! If you don’t participate or don’t take the exam without deregistering in courses that you’ve registered for, you will be given a “no grade”. This grade will also be indicated on your transcript during your study.

Exception: The choice of courses for a particular period can only be changed after the deadline if an (in)sufficient grade was published (and known) after the registration period. In this case, you can request to change your courses via SurfYourSelf until the first day of the start of the course period.

Registration for examinations – Registration procedure

Students who have registered for the course in its entirety are automatically registered for the ‘first chance examination’ (= first sit).

In case you failed this first chance (part of the course registration) and received a grade below 5.5 or a ‘fail’ you will be registered for the upcoming resit option in the same academic year.

However you yourself need to register for an (second) examination via StudentPortal in any of the following cases:

  • you did not take part in the above mentioned first chance option (because you deregistered) and wish to participate in the resit option;
  • you received an ‘NG’ for the first chance (because you did not attend the examination);
  • you registered ‘takes exam only’ for the first chance in the current academic year and failed and wish to participate in a resit option;

Do note a registration for a resit option (even if the resit is offered as a paper, oral examination or organised by the coordinator) is necessary in order to be able to process the result. If you do not have a valid registration, no results will be processed.

Without a valid registration, you cannot participate in the examination and/or possible results will be declared invalid.

A short guideline:

Go to the StudentPortal > failed courses. Select “more actions”.

If you did not pass the first sit, nor the resit, you can also register for the exam by registering for the course during the registration period for the education with booking reason ‘takes exam only’.  In this case you will have access to the course material directly from the start of the period.

Note: It is only possible to register for an ‘exam only’, if you were registered for the course previously and did not complete the course successfully
